Join us for an inspiring session of the Junior Conservationist Series featuring Grand Ronde's nursery manager, Jeremy Ouja. The Grand Ronde Tribes and camas have a significant historical connection. Camas, a native plant with edible bulbs, was a staple food source for the Kalapuya people, one of the many tribes and bands represented by the Grand Ronde Tribe. The Kalapuya, among others, were forcibly removed to the Grand Ronde Indian Reservation in 1855. Camas remains a culturally important plant for the Grand Ronde Tribe and other Indigenous communities in the Pacific Northwest.
The Grand Ronde Tribe actively works to preserve and promote the cultural significance of camas and other traditional plants, as part of their ongoing efforts to revitalize tribal traditions.
